Welcome to Holmestead, England ~ where an American ex-pat, an archaeologist, and murder turn this picture postcard village upside down.

Maggie Mulgrew runs The Ash Leaf, an antique shop in the quaint village of Holmestead, England ~ which has nothing to do with Sherlock, thank you very much. She sells her goods to disappointed tourists, and locals who appreciate her eclectic taste.

Professor Pembroke Martin is hunting down an artifact that had been stolen by a former assistant ~ a hand-blown apothecary jar that is the center of an old ghost story. His search leads him to Holmestead, and a stubborn, fascinating American who has acquired the box that once contained the rare jar.

When the missing jar turns up, clutched in the hand of the very dead local historian, Martin becomes the prime suspect. With his future on the line, Martin turns to Maggie for help, and they join forces to find the real killer.

Maggie Mulgrew Mysteries:
Book 1 - Ghost of a Chance
Book 2 - Written on the Wind
Book 3 - Spirit of the Season

  • Enjoyable Read

The book was a fast read that still had the reader guessing who did the murders. Unexpected ending. Very enjoyable.

I enjoyed “Ghost of a Chance” from the very start. This book is fun and the characters are engaging. It’s a perfect easy summer read, and I found myself wanting to hear more as I finished it. My one wish was to have more ghostly presence in the story, but perhaps that comes in the next volume.

I love this iBook story! New author to me, Cate Dean, you have a new and want-to-read-anything-you-have-written-or-will-in-the-future-write-loyal-Fan!!! By chance, I was browsing in the Free iBooks Section. And, found this story. After reading the details, my curiosity and interests were piqued. I do like mysteries, based in an England countryside. And, paranormal, also drew me in. I usually like stories to be more lengthy. But, Cate tells the story superbly! So, don't feel discouraged of the shorter length--she packs a lot of information into the iBook. Very descriptive in characters, and sceneries, you won't be disappointed! Yes, I am on to purchase the next iBook in this series. Looking forward to all of your stories, Cate!!! 🐰🐰🐰 I was re looking at my review. Somehow, the number of rating of the STARS was off--like 2 or 3! I hope I have corrected this to FIVE STARS AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN!!! 🐰🐰🐰

I read my ebooks at night in bed with the lights out, and they usually put me to sleep in a fairly short time. However, reading Ghost of a Chance kept me awake and I couldn’t put it down. It flows quickly and easily. Cate weaves a great story. I’m looking forward to reading her other books.

A very well written and clever beginning for a series. The characters are well defined. Having a strong female protagonist is the best hook for drawing the reader in. The merest hint of the supernatural is a welcome change.
